The Kern River Valley sits within a vast, recreation-rich area of the Sierra Nevada mountains, that includes 578 miles of trails, 25 campgrounds, and 10 designated day-use sites.
The region is highly bio-diverse spanning high alpine forests and meadows, to high desert regions dominated by joshua trees. It contains one of the longest contiguous riparian forests left in the United States.
Much of the area is protected as wilderness and wild & scenic river designations.
Communities in the area include Lake Isabella, Kernville, Weldon, Mountain Mesa, Onyx, Walker Pass, Caliente, Bodfish, Wofford Heights, Kelso Creek, all with their own unique characteristics and history.
